PRESERVE YOUR LAND
There are a variety of preservation programs available to
landowners. Some are administered by government agencies,
others by nonprofit organizations like the Land Trust. We can
help you figure out which method is best for you.
Farmland or Open Space?
Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of land preservation:
• Farmland preservation is designed for farms and involves restricting land to agricultural uses. In most cases, the landowner retains ownership of the property and can sell it at a later date.
• Open space preservation is intended mostly for natural areas and involves the protection of natural resources and the establishment of public parkland. This type of agreement typically entails selling or donating land outright..
In both cases, limitations on the property “run with the land,” which means they are passed from owner to owner. The land is protected in perpetuity and can never be developed.
