DESCRIPTION:Help us protect the old-growth forest system at Zega-Lockatong Preserve! We will be working on removing shrubby invasive plants\, caging saplings growing in canopy gaps\, and maintaining active stewardship areas. We will also record observations of the level of beech leaf disease present. Stewardship work in forests with beeches is especially important right now\, to ensure that as they decline\, the resulting gaps in the canopy can support new native saplings.\n  \nSIGN UP\n  \nWe are grateful for support of this event from the Lower Delaware Wild and Scenic River Program.

DESCRIPTION:Zega-Lockatong Preserve contains a beautiful old growth forest\, where on the first Thursday of each month we work to mitigate the effects of the introduced tree pathogen beech leaf disease (BLD) for overall forest health. We target areas where the canopy is dying back from BLD\, and remove invasive shrubs while protecting native saplings from herbivory. DESCRIPTION:We will be working on improving the shrubland at Quakertown Preserve by removing the woody invasive shrubs to make room for the diversity of native shrubs growing there. We’ll also collect cuttings of dogwoods for propagation. Shrubland is a habitat that is declining in many areas\, so it’s even more critical for birds that depend on it such as prairie warblers\, indigo buntings\, and eastern towhees.\nSign Up

DESCRIPTION:This month we will work on maintaining the new and old deer exclosures and explore what’s been growing inside. We’ll hopefully find some plants that are preferred by deer\, who don’t get much of a chance to grow unless they’re protected from browsing. SUMMARY:BLD Action Team: First Meet-Up at Zega-Lockatong Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Zega-Lockatong Preserve contains acres of old-growth forest\, which includes many healthy beech trees. Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) is causing these trees to die back\, creating light gaps on the forest floor. The BLD Action Team will work to help mitigate the effects of this disturbance by reducing invasive species encroachment and protecting native sapling recruitment from herbivory in these gap areas. There are many roles that can be taken on for the team: from keeping up with research\, monitoring BLD effects\, or mapping\, to the hands-on invasive species removal and tree caging.\nSign Up
